SUMMARY:Pipe Cleaner
DESCRIPTION:
Sculpting with Pipe-Cleaners
March 5\, 2007 7-9pm

Chenille stems\, better known as pipe-cleaners\, are a perfect sculpting medium. The wire center serves as the structural support\, while the chenille fibers create a soft and sensual surface. They can be colorful or monochromatic\, playful or serious. We will look at several of artist Ginger Ertz's chenille pieces and discuss their evolution in terms of technique\, form\, and content/meaning. Participants will create their own pipe-cleaner sculptures using chenille stems\, styrofoam bases\, colored wire and beads. Ginger will offer guidance and instruction on how to realize in pipe-cleaners the image in each participant's mind\, for a more free-flowing process that reveals itself in the making. She will bring images of work by other artists in other mediums for additional inspiration.

Artist/Instructor\: Ginger Ertz has been making \\"doodles\\" since childhood and these sculptures are the physical embodiment of the drawings\, drawings which have most often been of invented three-dimensional objects. In this body of work\, I feel myself drawing in air with pipe-cleaners the same way that I draw on paper with pen and ink. The pieces are about pure and abstract form pulled out of my subconscious\, though they may bring to mind fantastic plant forms\, undersea creatures\, or other imaginary life forms. Inspired in part by Ernst Haeckel's Art Forms in Nature\, a book that my eyes never tire of feasting upon\, they are visual ideas brought to life\, evolving as they grow in my hands. The use of pipe-cleaners \\"chenille stems\\" as they are called these days affords the sculptures a familiarity and humor born of their soft fuzziness. Henri Matisse once wrote that \\"art should be like a comfortable armchair.\\" I hope these pieces offer the viewer something like the comfort of a favorite old bathrobe\, even as they present a challenge to the imagination.

SUMMARY:Movie - Corruption
DESCRIPTION:
The film chronicles the story of a Mafia hitman named Carlo Civitello. After many years in the Mafia\, Carlo begins to question why he got into organized crime and he begins to ponder his future. While he secretly dreams of escaping to an island paradise\, he finds himself trapped and bullied by his partner in crime\, Ben.

Ben\, the adoptive son of the head of the Pileggi crime family\, has been seeking a rise to power. In secret\, he knows if power is not given\, it has to be taken... violently.

Enter into all of this chaos a young man named Jeffrey Singer. As a child\, Jeffrey bore witness to the meth addiction of his father\, the abuse of a broken home and eventually a tragic death of his parents. Now\, as a young man\, Jeffrey seeks to bring justice to the world which betrayed him.

All of this results in a stunning cliffhanger in which all that the audience knows about right and wrong are questioned and one person will find out that crime really doesn’t pay when they do the unthinkable.

SUMMARY:Hal Holbrook in \\"Mark Twain Tonight\\"
DESCRIPTION:
When Hal Holbrook's Mark Twain Tonight! opened off-Broadway in 1959\, it took the theater world by storm and became an immediate hit. What started as a college honors project for aspiring actor Hal Holbrook soon became the model for one-man theatrical performances. Holbrook’s adaptations of Mark Twain’s writings remain as fresh today\, combining Twain’s satiric truisms with Holbrook’s impeccable comic timing. Hal Holbrook has won a Tony for his performance and was nominated for an Emmy for his performance that aired on CBS. Hal Holbrook in Mark Twain Tonight! is a must-see treasure of American theater.

SUMMARY:Adult Education - Fiber Collage\: finding form and composition
DESCRIPTION:
Participants in this workshop will start off the evening by creating a palette of textured two-dimensional materials using paints\, inks and mono-printing techniques on a variety of papers and fabrics. While these materials dry\, the artist will present her artwork in terms of the creative process\, the principles of art and how one becomes inspired and goes about creating even when the creative juices seem not to be flowing. Participants will then use a variety of collage techniques\, including fusing\, sewing and gluing\, along with the pallet of materials created by the group to create a piece of artwork. Participants will discover that in creating a piece of artwork they will carry on a dialogue with not only themselves\, and the people around them but also with the materials and techniques used to execute the piece.

Artist/Instructor\: Peg Foley is a fiber artist and art educator. She teaches art full time at Schenectady High School and shows her artwork throughout the Northeast. She is a member of the Oakroom Artists and The Designer Crafts Council. Peg spent fifteen years working as a metal smith and museum educator\, marketing her work around the state before turning to fiber arts as a medium for expression. After receiving her master¹s degree in fiber arts and art education she turned to quilting as her primary medium. Her present work is fiber collage/quilts and draws from the quilt maker¹s process of fragmenting\, layering and restructuring\, a process that often mirrors life. Her process involves painting\, screen-printing\, block printing\, felting\, and weaving along with traditional quilting techniques. Much of her present work reflects her struggle with our perception of time as we move through space and how that perception is altered by the structures we operate within.

SUMMARY:Adult Education - The Shoebox Diorama\: Thinking Inside the Box
DESCRIPTION:
This workshop presents the idea of the shoebox diorama traditionally the province of elementary school book reports\, social studies projects and geography units as an extension of collage and assemblage\, a miniature form of installation art worthy of serious consideration as a medium for self-expression\, story-telling and formal experimentation. After looking at examples of artists¹ shadowbox dioramas and discussing the special qualities of space that boxes and small containers embody\, we will construct dioramas from a variety of craft and found materials. We will consider how to create illusions of space and fictive or narrative situations by the selection and arrangement of objects and images within the frame of a box. By thinking about the shoebox diorama as a variation of such forms as shrines\, altars\, toy theaters\, doll houses and spirit houses\, curio cabinets\, museum habitats\, window displays or stage sets\, we can begin to see the potential for creating new and original works of art.

Artist/Instructor\: CHARLES STECKLER is a studio artist\, photographer and theatrical designer. He has exhibited his work - drawings\, prints\, photographs\, collages and dioramas - in numerous one-person and group exhibitions and has designed stage sets for over 100 shows. He has been a Yaddo Fellow\, an Associate at the Atlantic Center for the Arts\, a Resident Artist at the Vermont Studio Center and a Prix de Rome Finalist. He received his B.A. from Queens College and his MFA from Yale University. He is Professor of Theater at Union College.

Set in a world of political intrigue and strained domestic relationships\, the production explores the moral and political dilemma of Marcus Brutus.
